Born in 1955 in Kokubunji, Tokyo. As a sax player, Junji Hirose has been a prominent figure on the free jazz/improvised music scene since the late 1970s. Since the early '80s, he has also performed using noise instruments he calls SSI (self-made sound instruments), which he creates by combining everyday items/odds and ends in tabletop-style setups. He has produced several types of SSI by reforming and modifying the instrument; each type is identified by a number such as SSI-4 or SSI-6. Most of the SSIs that he has created are still in use today.
